Your guide to Munich, Germany: Oktoberfest Edition

A festival dedicated to beer? Count me in! Even though Munich isn’t usually my top pick for a destination, when Oktoberfest rolls around, I’m packing my bags faster than you can say “Prost!” Join me as I share some highlights from the world’s biggest beer bash and drop a few Oktoberfest survival tips along the way.

One of the first things on my Oktoberfest agenda? Snagging traditional Bavarian attire! Thanks to some pre-planning, my friend and I rocked dirndls -and “Ladyhosen”(a first for us) and fully embraced the festive spirit. Trust me, there’s something magical about dressing the part – it’s like stepping into a whole new world of merriment.

However, a word of caution: Please try not to buy the cheap stuff off of Amazon. Instead, consider renting traditional attire if you’re on a budget or opt for authentic pieces from local shops. We were going for multiple days, so I ended up getting a few outfits! While I know it’s not traditional, the girls in the shop talked me into getting the female lederhosen, or as I liked to call them, ladyhosen πŸ˜‚. At the end of the day, just buy something fun and that you feel comfortable in, and I promise no one really cares too much!

Beyond Beer: Funfair Delights Contrary to popular belief, Oktoberfest isn’t just about beer (though there’s plenty of that). Picture this: a sprawling funfair with rides, games, and attractions that rival any county fair. From classic Ferris wheels to adrenaline-pumping roller coasters, there’s no shortage of thrills to be had.

Let’s talk about the real stars of Oktoberfest – the food and drinks! I indulged in steins of frothy beer, savory schnitzels, and mouthwatering grilled treats like sausages and ham hocks. And let’s not forget the sweet side of things – gingerbread hearts, sugar-coated almonds, and more satisfied my sweet tooth in the best way possible.

One of the things I love most about Oktoberfest is the atmosphere. Live bands belting out catchy tunes, people dancing on benches with infectious energy, and the unmistakable sound of “prost!” echoing through the tents – it’s a celebration unlike any other.

Tips for Oktoberfest Survival

If you’re planning your own Oktoberfest adventure, here are a few tips to make the most of your experience:

  • Book accommodation early, as places fill up fast- we booked 11 months in advance and barely got into the hostel we wanted!
  • Consider flying to nearby airports and taking a train to Munich to save on airfare.
  • Embrace traditional attire for the full Oktoberfest immersion, but avoid cheap imitations.
  • Arrive early to snag a table in the tents – it’s worth it for the authentic experience.
  • Pace yourself with the beer – those steins can sneak up on you!
  • Explore multiple tents to soak in different vibes and atmospheres.
  • Use public transportation instead of driving to the festival grounds.
  • Wear/bring tennis shoes you can leave behind and an extra blouse for comfort and style.

As I bid farewell to Munich and Oktoberfest, I couldn’t help but cherish the memories made and the friends met along the way. Whether you’re a beer enthusiast, a thrill-seeker, or simply a lover of good times, Oktoberfest offers something for everyone. So here’s to raising a stein, making new memories, and saying “prost!” to life’s adventures. Until next time, cheers!
